It’s time to start preparing your homestead for spring! Warmer days are creeping in, although depending on where you live you might have what we like to call “fake spring”. We had the most beautiful couple of weeks recently where it was warm and the sun was out. But now we are back to rain and chilly days. Tis’ the season! But as winter fades and the days grow longer, it’s time to prepare our little homestead for the arrival of spring. A new season brings fresh opportunities for us, but it also requires preparation to ensure our property, animals, and home are ready to thrive. I put together a checklist for you too to get your homestead in top shape for spring. Check it out below!
P.S. With warmer days on the horizon, now is the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved! Check out this post where I talk in depth about ranch kids and chores!
1. Assess Winter Damage
Before diving into new projects, inspect your home for any damage caused by winter weather. Check things like:
- Roofs, fences, and outbuildings for leaks or structural issues
- Water pipes for any cracks or leaks from freezing temperatures
- Trees for broken branches that need pruning or removal
2. Prepare the Garden
Spring is planting season, so take the time to get your garden beds ready:
- Clean up debris, dead plants, and weeds
- Test soil pH and amend it as needed with compost or fertilizers
- Start seeds indoors for early planting
- Sharpen and clean garden tools for efficiency
3. Tend to Your Livestock
Your animals will appreciate some springtime care after the winter months:
- Check fences and enclosures for any needed repairs
- Clean out barns, chicken coops, and animal shelters
- Deworm and provide necessary vaccinations for livestock
- Increase fresh water availability as temperatures rise
4. Inspect Equipment and Tools
Before the busy season begins, make sure all your equipment is in working order:
- Tune up lawnmowers, chainsaws, and other power tools
- Check tractors, tillers, and ATVs for maintenance needs
- Stock up on fuel, oil, and replacement parts
5. Restock and Refresh Supplies
Spring is a great time to take inventory of essential supplies:
- Replenish seed stock for gardens and pastures
- Stock up on animal feed and bedding materials
- Organize first aid kits for both humans and animals
6. Declutter and Deep Clean
A little spring cleaning can make a big difference on your homestead:
- Organize the barn, sheds, and storage areas
- Wash windows, air out bedding, and deep clean the house
- Sort through tools and equipment, donating or repurposing items you no longer need
7. Plan for Spring Projects
Now is the time to finalize any big plans for the coming months:
- Build new raised beds or expand the garden
- Add fencing or new structures for animals
- Install rainwater collection systems or irrigation improvements
By taking the time to start preparing your homestead for Spring now, you’ll set yourself up for a successful and productive spring. Here’s to the warmer days ahead!
