Our journey as entrepreneurs has never been a straight line road. As I am sure most are not. I think it takes a certain type of person to want to be married to someone with big dreams and business goals. And I think a lot of people think they have it in them until they realize they do not. I always joke that I was the biggest dreamer I knew, until I met Tyler. Then I met my match.
Meeting My Match
Collectively, both separate and together, Tyler and I have owned a photography business, custom farming business, horse training business, and trucking company.
Tyler dreams as big as the sky and then he dreams a little bit more.
For a long time, I never really knew anyone else who wanted to or had actually started a business. It was new territory for me and I was figuring it all out on my own. In fact I think most people thought I was dumb. Not because of the business itself. But the “why” behind it. Growing up, I had 2 working parents. None of my friends had stay at home moms. In fact, I don’t even think I knew anyone who was one or had one. Which is why it’s somewhat funny that I even had the thought that I wanted to be one someday.
God had always had that on my heart. But obviously when you are 17 about to graduate high school you can’t just tell your guidance counselors (or your parents) that you are wanting to get married ASAP so you can start having babies and stay home with them.
The Lazy Way Out
The funny thing is, most people would consider you lazy if that’s what you said you wanted. They would tell you that you have no dreams or aspirations and that you should want to do more with your life than just “be a mom and wife”. Where did we get it wrong as a society? How is being a wife and mother the easy way out? But if you choose to work 50 hours a week, never have time to see your family, miss your kids milestones, and have so much stress on your back… that is what success looks like. If that is true, I guess I will be the odd one out here. In my eyes, success is spending as much time as I can with my babies even with the sacrifices that come with that. Sure, we would make more money if I worked full time. But for what exactly? To buy more stuff we don’t need?
Being a stay at home mom has taught me so much about sacrifice, patience, generosity, and stillness. I am a better person doing this than I ever would be doing anything else.
But with that being said, I do have that “dreamer” bone inside of me. I have the itch to grow something that can be passed down to our kids someday. We want to be able to work from home as a family and do something together. Something that can support our dream of being cattle ranchers one day.
More Options
I never want my kids to feel like college is the only option for them. It’s an option for sure. But not the only one. We live in a society that tells us we need to follow the “normal” path. Graduate high school, go to college, get a 9-5, then eventually settle down, have kids, and do the same thing over and over again.
Maybe that life is for some people, and that is totally ok! But It just was never for me. It was never for Tyler. And I don’t want my babies to feel like they have no other options in life.
So if you are reading this, and maybe you are the person wanting more. Or wanting something different…. I hear you. And I want to come along side you and say that you can do anything you pour your heart and soul into. It might take a ton of work. You might have to grind at it and push through a lot of struggles. There might be failures and embarrassing moments you won’t want to own up to. But in the end, I promise it’s worth it. And at the end of the day, you are willing to at least try something that most of the world never would. That alone is something to be proud of.
