Journaling isn’t just for grown-ups! It’s an engaging and fun activity for preschoolers too! We recently started incorporating this into our morning circle time and it’s been so fun watching Stetson do his daily prompts.
Even at a young age, kids can begin to reflect on their day, express emotions, and spark their creativity through simple prompts. Daily journaling helps build early writing and drawing skills, while also encouraging self-awareness and gratitude.
If you’re looking for easy ways to guide your little one, here’s a list of preschool-friendly journal prompts that can be answered with a few words, scribbles, or drawings.
Feelings & Self-Awareness
- How are you feeling today? (Happy, sad, silly, tired, etc.)
- Draw your favorite face (smile, silly, surprised).
- What made you smile today?
- What’s something you’re really good at?
- Show me your “biggest feeling” right now.
Daily Life
- What did you eat for breakfast/lunch/snack?
- Who did you play with today?
- What’s the best thing you saw today?
- Draw what you wore today.
- Where did you go today?
Imagination & Creativity
- If you could be an animal, what would you be?
- Draw a pretend pet.
- What would you build with blocks today?
- If you could fly, where would you go?
- Make up a silly monster (what’s its name?).
Gratitude & Reflection
- What’s your favorite toy today?
- Who do you love?
- What’s something nice you did for someone today?
- What’s one thing you’re thankful for?
- What’s your favorite part of today?
Seasonal & Thematic Prompts
- Draw the weather outside.
- What’s your favorite thing about [season]?
- What holiday is coming up soon?
- What’s your favorite color today?
- What’s your favorite book right now?
Make It Simple and Fun
- A spot to circle a feeling face
- A space to draw something from their day
- One short journal prompt to answer with words, drawings, or stickers
Whether your preschooler scribbles, draws, or dictates their answers to you (like my son does most days), journaling can be a sweet way to connect with them each day. Over time, you’ll both love looking back on the little moments and big feelings they captured.
