We’re the Elrods: Tyler, Sarah, and our little ranch kids.
At our core, we’re just a family chasing a dream that’s much bigger than ourselves. Our mission is simple: become first-generation ranchers, build a life centered on faith and hard work, and create a legacy our children can carry long after we’re gone.
I’m Sarah, and you’ll probably hear from me the most. I’m the storyteller behind Elrod Ranch, the one sharing our everyday life, the lessons we’re learning, and the highs (and lows) of building this dream.
Tyler is the visionary. He’s the entrepreneur, the problem solver, and the man who’s always thinking ten steps ahead. Together, we balance each other well. He dreams big, and I love documenting the journey that gets us there.
Around here, you’ll find a little bit of everything: ranch life, homemaking, homeschooling, raising kids in the country, entrepreneurship, recipes, honest stories, and the adventures that come with building a life from the ground up.
We hope our story encourages you to chase the dreams God has placed on your own heart, too.
Where It All Began
Our story started in 2018 with a Facebook message.
Tyler had stumbled across my profile while looking for someone to start a few horses. At the time, he lived in Montana and I lived in California. He messaged me asking about my training rates.
Little did either of us know that one simple message would completely change the course of our lives.
A few weeks later, I boarded a plane headed to Montana to work with his horses. Looking back, flying across the country to meet a stranger from the internet probably sounds a little crazy but sometimes God writes stories that don’t make much sense until you’re living them.
There was an incredible opportunity waiting for me, and if I’m being honest, the handsome cowboy didn’t hurt either.
I had only been in Montana for two weeks when I realized Tyler was the man I wanted to spend my life with.
Then everything changed.
One of the colts I was starting threw me off and came down on my leg, leaving me with a badly broken leg that required surgery back home in California.
That same night, after leaving the hospital, Tyler packed my bags, loaded me into his truck, and drove me 24 straight hours back to California so I could have surgery.
Twenty-four hours.
No complaints.
No hesitation.
Just showing up for someone he barely knew.
A couple weeks later, he packed his life into that same truck again—but this time, he was moving to California so we wouldn’t have to date long distance.
Even now, years later, that still amazes me.
The Road to Ranch Life
Life rarely follows the plan you imagined.
After moving to California, finding work wasn’t easy for Tyler, so he eventually accepted a job back in the oil fields of North Dakota. After a while, I packed my bags and joined him.
We weren’t there very long, but those months shaped us. We learned how to lean on each other, work together, and trust God with our future.
Eventually another opportunity led us to Reno, Nevada, a place we never expected to call home.
Today, we’re raising our family on a rented ranch.
No, we don’t own the land.
But it’s where we’ve built our marriage, welcomed our babies into the world, started raising livestock, and taken our first real steps toward the ranching life we’ve always dreamed about.
Home isn’t always about ownership.
Sometimes it’s about the memories you build while you’re waiting for what’s next.
The Dream Ahead
Our dream has always been bigger than where we are today.
One day, we hope to own a ranch of our own, raise animals, and continue building a business our children can be part of for generations.
Whether that eventually takes us back to Montana or somewhere completely unexpected, we’ll let God write that chapter.
For now, we’re choosing to faithfully steward what’s in front of us.
We’re growing our businesses, learning everything we can, and saying “yes” to the opportunities God places in our path.
Every season has a purpose.
Living a Life of Calculated Risks
People often ask how we’ve managed to do some of the things we’ve done.
Move across the country.
Start businesses.
Chase dreams that don’t always make logical sense.
The truth is…
Our entire relationship has been built on calculated risks.
From the moment our paths crossed, it feels like we’ve constantly been stepping into the unknown.
Before I met Tyler, I thought I was a pretty big dreamer.
Then I met him.
He dreams even bigger.
He’s willing to work harder than anyone I know, isn’t afraid to fail, and has an incredible ability to see possibilities where most people only see obstacles.
Do all of our ideas work out?
Not even close.
But every setback teaches us something, and every lesson brings us one step closer to the life we’re building.
People sometimes ask if I’m nervous about the risks we take.
Honestly?
Not really.
Because I trust Tyler.
He’s thoughtful. He’s strategic. He’s willing to work for what he wants.
Most importantly, he’s a man who follows Jesus.
That gives me peace, because I know we’re not chasing success for its own sake—we’re simply trying to be faithful with the opportunities God gives us.
