Motherhood is a journey that evolves with every season of life. But this season especially has been full of learning opportunities for me. Every day I am learning something new about myself and God is showing me how I need to change. As a mama raising a toddler, and a baby in rural America, I’ve found that this chapter of my life is as challenging as it is beautiful. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned in this unique season:

The Beauty of Slowing Down

Living in a rural area naturally forces life to move at a slower pace, but motherhood has amplified this even more. While we don’t live terribly far away from a store, it’s also not close enough to leave the house on a whim when we need something. Amazon 2 day shipping is also 3-4 days of shipping. With a toddler in the house, I’ve learned to embrace the small, quiet moments. Watching him marvel at a bugs in the grass, enjoy the crisp air during early-morning chores, or simply sitting together under a blanket on the couch. Slowing down has taught me to find joy in the present and appreciate life’s simplicity.

The Importance of Flexibility

As a stay-at-home mom, no two days are the same. Some days, I feel like I’ve got everything under control, while others are a whirlwind of tantrums, spilled snacks, and unexpected surprises. It’s nearly impossible to make plans because something is always going to be changing. This used to frustrate me to no end. But over time I have learned to roll with the punches and with a smile on my face.

The Power of Community

Living where we live can feel isolating at times, but I’ve come to value the tight-knit community around me. The small town feel out here means people are always offering up baked goods, eggs, etc. But we also have a really great church family that we get to see several times per week. They love on our kids and definitely fill my social cup. Community is essential when you are in the trenches of motherhood! It’s okay to ask for help, and building connections makes this journey so much richer.

The Art of Balancing Priorities

As a millennial mom, I often feel the pull of modern life—social media, side hustles, and the desire to “have it all.” But being a mama has reminded me of what truly matters. Balancing my child’s needs, household responsibilities, and my personal goals is a daily challenge, but it’s taught me to prioritize what’s meaningful over what’s trendy.

The Joy of Teaching and Learning

Raising a toddler and baby in a rural environment provides endless teaching moments. Things they simply could not learn living anywhere else. They get hands on experience caring for animals each day. They learn how to plan ahead and spend money responsibly and strategically. We get to see the moon and stars each night so brightly. Something you just can’t see in the city. At the same time, my child teaches me—to be curious, to laugh more, and to see the world through fresh eyes.

Self-Care Is Non-Negotiable

Motherhood is a full-time job, and being a stay-at-home mom means there are no clock-out times. There’s that saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup” but the truth is, yes you can. And as a mom, you have to sometimes. I do try to find time each day to do things that fulfill me though. My mornings spent in my bible have been huge. But I also love to spend time with the horses, and even doing things like writing these blog posts!

Gratitude Changes Everything In Motherhood

It’s easy to get caught up in the hard moments: the sleepless nights, the endless laundry, or the feeling of being stuck in a routine. But practicing gratitude has been a game-changer. I’m thankful for the chance to raise my kiddos in a peaceful, natural environment and for the lessons that come with this season of life.

Motherhood is a profound teacher, and this season as a millennial, rural, stay-at-home mom has been no exception. It’s a journey of growth, resilience, and love—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. To all the moms out there navigating your own seasons, know that you’re not alone, and there’s beauty to be found in every chapter.
