Brace yourself becasue I am about to go on a rant on why I don’t buy organic food. Buckle up.
Every time I am at the grocery store choosing produce (or any food for that matter) I make the conscience choice to not choose the organic food. But why? As someone who has spent time around agriculture, as well as my husband – my opinions on organic food are pretty clear.
For years, “organic” has been treated like a golden label. A badge of health, purity, and virtue. Grocery stores dedicate entire aisles to it. But here’s the thing: buying organic doesn’t automatically make your food healthier, cleaner, or more sustainable. In fact, there are plenty of good reasons not to buy organic food — and I’m going to break them down.
The Price Tag Isn’t Worth It
Organic food often costs 20% to 100% more than its conventional counterpart. And for what?
According to a Stanford University study, there’s little to no difference in nutrient levels between organic and non-organic foods. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are nearly identical. That extra cost isn’t buying you extra nutrition. Why pay more for a label when the product inside is basically the same?
“Organic” Doesn’t Always Mean Eco-Friendly
It’s easy to assume organic farming is better for the planet, but the reality is more complicated. Organic crops typically have lower yields, meaning more land and water are needed to produce the same amount of food. Some organic-approved pesticides are naturally derived but still toxic to insects and wildlife — and because they’re less potent, they often have to be used more frequently.
In other words, organic farming isn’t automatically sustainable. Sometimes it’s actually less efficient.
Local Can Be Better Than Organic
Here’s something I’ve learned from living in a rural area: many small farms grow their food responsibly and sustainably but can’t afford the expensive “organic” certification. Their produce is fresh, nutrient-rich, and often grown with far more care than what you find in big-box organic brands.
Buying local means supporting your community and eating food that was probably picked within days — not weeks — of landing on your plate. And that freshness matters more for your health than any label.
“Organic” Has Become a Marketing Word
Let’s be honest: the word “organic” sells. Big corporations know it, and they’ve capitalized on it. Now you can buy organic cookies, organic soda, and even organic mac and cheese — none of which are exactly health foods. Organic junk food is still junk food. The label doesn’t magically turn processed snacks into something nutritious.
Nothing Is Truly “Safe”
This is where I might fall somewhere in between or completely off base depending on your stance. But the “crunchy” mom in me doesn’t believe any of it is good for you. The pesticides they use on organic and non organic food are all toxic no matter what they try and tell you. So why pay more for it?? Shopping local at farmers markets or private farms is truly going to be your best bet in my opinion. But there’s still no guarantee they aren’t using pesticides….
The Bottom Line
If buying organic gives you peace of mind, that’s fine. But don’t feel pressured to spend more just because it’s trendy or because someone online said you should. So here I am, someone else online saying you shouldn’t HA! Conventional produce is not less safe than organic. Local food is often better. And “organic” isn’t the only path to healthy, ethical eating.
Sometimes the smartest choice for your wallet, your family, and even the planet is simply buying what’s fresh, in season, and grown with care — no fancy label required.
