Homeschooling Preschool has begun in the Elrod household! Teaching your kids at home is one of those things that can spark a lot of different reactions. I will admit, for a long time I believed homeschool kids always turned out “weird”. But my mind started shifting on this when I met kids who were homeschooled. And frankly, it started becoming more acceptable in society.

Some people immediately think of it as the best way to give their children a tailored, family-centered education. Others imagine long days of lesson planning, endless patience, and wondering if your child will “miss out” on something.

For us, deciding to homeschool our 3-year-old wasn’t a quick decision. It was something we thought and prayed about for a long time. Ultimately, we realized it was the right fit for our family in this season.

We Wanted To Be Their First Teacher

One of the biggest reasons we chose to homeschool is simple. We wanted to be the ones guiding our child’s earliest learning experiences. The toddler and preschool years are such a precious time, and we didn’t want to miss the little moments of discovery. Whether it’s learning to count while stacking blocks, identifying colors in the garden, or reading together on the couch, we love that our child gets to learn in a way that feels natural and relational.

Flexibility For Our Family Lifestyle

Every family has its own rhythm, and ours doesn’t exactly fit into the 9-to-3 school schedule. Between work, homesteading, and raising little siblings, homeschooling gives us the flexibility to structure our days in a way that works best for everyone. Some days learning looks like hands-on science in the barnyard. And other days it’s baking bread together or painting at the kitchen table. The freedom to shape education around our life (instead of the other way around) was a huge factor in our decision.

Learning At Their Own Pace

Children don’t all learn at the same speed. And we wanted our 3-year-old to be able to grow at their own pace. Homeschooling means we can lean into their interests. Like spending a week learning all about apples during harvest season. Or slow down and practice a concept until it really clicks. There’s no pressure to “keep up” with a classroom of peers. Just steady, joyful learning that meets them where they are.

A Faith-Filled Foundation

For us, faith is at the center of family life, and homeschooling gives us the opportunity to weave Biblical truth into everyday learning. Whether it’s a simple Bible verse memory activity, singing worship songs together, or noticing God’s creation on a nature walk. We love that education at home can also nurture their spiritual growth.

More Family Time

These years are fleeting. Homeschooling gives us the gift of more time together—time to laugh, explore, create, and learn side by side. Our kids are only little once, and we don’t want to miss these moments.

Final Thoughts

Homeschooling a 3-year-old isn’t about creating a strict classroom at home. It’s about building an environment where curiosity, creativity, and character can thrive. For our family, it feels like the best way to lay a strong foundation, both educationally and spiritually.

We know every family has to choose the path that works best for them, but for us, homeschooling is about so much more than academics. It’s about cultivating a lifestyle of learning and togetherness. And right now, that feels exactly where we’re meant to be.
