When I first wrote this post, Roscoe was about to turn seven years old. It was meant to be a simple introduction to one of the most important members of our ranch.

I never imagined that just a little over a year later, I would be opening this post to change it from a meet-and-greet into a memorial.

If you’ve never loved a dog the way I did, it can be hard to understand. There’s a misconception that because people like us raise livestock and work with animals every day, we somehow become less attached to them.

The truth is exactly the opposite.

Ranchers, and other people like us, are some of the biggest animal lovers you’ll ever meet. We spend our lives caring for them, protecting them, respecting them, and often grieving them. Every animal has a purpose, but every animal also has value. We know firsthand that life is precious, and because of that, we don’t take it for granted.

Our dogs are no exception.

Some dogs earn their keep by gathering cattle or protecting sheep.

Roscoe’s job was different.

I always joked that he was “the world’s most useless ranch dog.” He never worked a cow a single day in his life. He wasn’t a livestock guardian, and he certainly wasn’t interested in helping around the ranch.

But he was ours.

And that was more than enough.

From Tiny Puppy to My Best Friend

I got Roscoe for my 22nd birthday when he was only five weeks old.

Yes, I know that’s much younger than puppies should normally leave their mom. It wasn’t the plan, but unexpected circumstances made it necessary.

He was so tiny. I used to call him my little potato because he was nothing more than a fuzzy little ball with oversized ears and paws that he hadn’t quite figured out yet.

Like every young girl getting her very first dog, I took him absolutely everywhere.

He came with me to photography sessions when I was building my business and he rode along to horse training clients. He tagged along on lake days, coffee runs, road trips, family gatherings, and every excuse I could find to leave the house. If dogs were allowed, Roscoe was coming too.

Looking back, those years feel so simple.

It was just me and my dog.

Then We Became a Family

Only four months after bringing Roscoe home, I met Tyler.

From the very beginning, Tyler loved Roscoe like he had always been his. He quickly became the dog dad I had hoped my boy would have, and before long, the three of us were building a life together.

Then came marriage.

Then babies.

One after another, our family grew.

Naturally, Roscoe wasn’t the center of my world anymore.

Any parent knows exactly what I’m talking about. The day your first baby is born, everything shifts. The things that once demanded all of your attention quietly take a step back.

I sometimes wondered if that transition was hard for him.

He went from sleeping beside me every night and riding shotgun everywhere I went to sharing me with three little kids who suddenly needed me every second of every day.

But if it bothered him, he never showed it.

He simply adjusted.

Trading adventures for afternoons stretched out at my feet while I folded laundry. Long truck rides for patiently waiting while toddlers climbed all around him. He traded being my baby for becoming their childhood dog.

And he did it without ever asking for anything in return.

My Constant Companion

There was something incredibly comforting about Roscoe’s presence.

He was always nearby. Always.

If I was cooking dinner, he was laying on the kitchen floor. Or if I was editing photos, he was asleep beside my desk.

When I stepped outside, he followed.

Not because I told him to. Because that’s just where he wanted to be.

Some of my favorite memories aren’t the big adventures.

They’re the ordinary moments.

The sound of his heavy panting after coming inside. Watching him twitch in his sleep as he chased something through his dreams. The way he’d sigh before settling down beside me for another evening.

Those little sounds filled our home for years.

Now, they’re the sounds I miss the most.

The Best Guardian

Anyone who met Roscoe knew one thing immediately: He took protecting his family very seriously.

He wasn’t aggressive for the sake of being aggressive. He was simply always watching.

Always aware and always between us and whatever he thought might be a threat.

Thankfully, he never had to prove what he was capable of. But I never questioned it. Not once.

I always felt safe when Roscoe was with me because I knew, without hesitation, that if someone ever tried to hurt one of us, he would have laid down his life without a second thought.

That’s a kind of loyalty that’s impossible to repay.

Loyal Beyond Words

If I had to describe Roscoe with one word, it would be loyal.

He wasn’t the kind of dog that wandered off and he didn’t roam the neighborhood.

A fence wasn’t necessary to keep him home.

In fact, we rarely even kept a collar on him because he simply wasn’t interested in being anywhere we weren’t.

Home wasn’t a place to Roscoe. It was his people.

The Dog My Kids Will Always Remember

One of the sweetest gifts God gave me was watching my children fall in love with the dog who had first stolen my heart.

He stopped being “My dog” and became their Roscoe.

The dog they threw balls for and tried to around the neck.

They giggled while running around the yard after him.

The dog who patiently tolerated little hands, loud voices, and endless invitations to play.

Their youngest childhood memories will always include him.

And I couldn’t ask for a greater legacy.

Until We Meet Again

There is an empty spot in our home now.

The kitchen floor feels quieter.

The house feels different.

There are no more toenails clicking across the tile. No familiar sigh as he settles in beside us. No shadow following me from room to room.

Losing a dog leaves a hole that’s difficult to explain to someone who’s never experienced it.

Roscoe wasn’t “just a dog”, He was there through nearly every major chapter of my adult life.

He watched me build a business and fall in love and was there the day I became a wife and welcomed each of our babies home.

He grew up right alongside our family.

Eight and a half years will never feel like enough.

But what a gift those years were.

Thank you, Roscoe, for every adventure, every quiet afternoon, every laugh, every muddy paw print, every moment of comfort, and every ounce of unconditional love you gave us.

You were the very best boy.

We’ll love you forever.
