Fall, especially September – is the perfect time to dive into an Apple unit study for preschool with your preschooler! Not only are apples in season, but they provide endless opportunities for hands-on learning, exploration, and fun. I was so excited to put this unit study together for the week, and I just had to share my ideas with you! Pick and choose the things that sound fun for you and your preschooler, or do them all!

Whether you’re homeschooling or just looking for intentional activities to do at home, this Apple unit study for preschool will cover key preschool subjects through the theme of apples!

Side Note: If you go to the bottom of this post, you can purchase a full week breakdown of this unit study with printable worksheets included! This is perfect for the homeschooling parent who just wants to open, and go!

Language Arts

  • Letter of the Week: A for Apple. Practice recognizing, tracing, and saying the letter (both upper and lower case).
  • Story Time: Read books like Ten Apples Up on Top by Dr. Seuss or Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington.
  • Phonics: Listen for the “A” sound in words (apple, ant, alligator) and play a matching game with picture cards.
  • Activity: Make an “A is for Apple” craft using red paint and a sponge, or paintbrush!

Math

  • Counting: Count real apples or paper cutouts, lining them up from 1–10.
  • Sorting: Sort apples by color – real or fake! (red, green, yellow).
  • Patterns: Create AB patterns (red-green-red-green).
  • Measuring: Weigh different apples on a kitchen scale and compare sizes or count apple seeds!

Creative Arts

  • Apple Prints: Cut an apple in half, dip it in paint, and stamp onto paper.
  • Craft: Tear red, green, and brown paper to make a mosaic apple.
  • Music: Sing “Way Up High in the Apple Tree” with hand motions.
  • Dramatic Play: Pretend to be at an apple orchard—pick, sell, and buy apples!

Science

  • Apple Observation: Look closely at the skin, seeds, and stem. Name all the parts of the apple.
  • Experiment: Cut an apple and watch what happens when it’s left out—why does it turn brown?
  • Taste Test: Try different varieties of apples and talk about the flavors (sweet, tart, crunchy).
  • Sink or Float: Place apples in water to see if they float.

Life Skills

  • Snack Time: Practice washing, slicing (with a child-safe knife), and serving apples.
  • Baking: Make applesauce or apple muffins together.
  • Responsibility: Let your child help clean up after cooking or snack prep.

Bible Study

  • Memory Verse: “the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control” – Galatians 5:22-23
  • Lesson Idea: Just like apples grow on trees, God’s Spirit helps us grow good things in our hearts. We can show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  • Craft: Create a paper apple tree and add “good fruit” (kindness, sharing, love) as you practice the Fruit of the Spirit.

Bringing It All Together

At the end of the week, celebrate with an Apple Party! Invite your preschooler to help set up a table with apple snacks, apple art, and a basket of their favorite apple books. You could even visit a local orchard to bring the whole unit study to life!
